I'm Dr. Avi Sanders, a licensed clinical psychologist. I work with individuals and couples who are tired of white-knuckling anxiety, stress, and the same painful patterns, and who want something that reaches the body as well as the thoughts.

You may be a busy professional who looks fine on the outside but can't switch off. You may be a parent or caregiver carrying more than anyone sees. Or you may have tried therapy before and found that talking about it helped you understand it, but didn't change how it feels in your body. I work with panic and body symptoms, constant worry and overthinking, perfectionism and burnout, and anxiety that has roots in earlier experiences.
Painful experiences from the past can stay in the body, and in the parts of us that learned to stay on guard. You might notice it as feeling easily startled, shutting down, going numb, or reacting more strongly than the moment seems to call for. We go at a pace that feels safe, using parts work (IFS), somatic approaches, nervous system regulation, and acceptance-based skills (ACT). You decide how much of your story we tell, and when.
Couples often come to me stuck in the same argument, or in a cycle where one person pushes and the other pulls away. Some are rebuilding after a rupture. Others are going through a big change, like a new baby, a career shift, or parenting challenges, and finding that it is straining the relationship. I help couples slow the cycle down, understand what is underneath it, and respond to each other differently.

I'm a certified IFS therapist. It starts from the idea that we all have different parts, and that the anxious or critical or shut-down part of you is usually trying to protect you, even when it works harder than it needs to. We get curious about those parts instead of fighting them. Over time, some parts can settle and others can heal, which can bring a greater sense of inner peace.
Anxiety and trauma aren't only thoughts. They live in your breath, your chest, your stomach, and your sleep. We pay attention to what your body is doing and learn ways to help it settle. I hold a certificate in somatic psychotherapy for trauma.
In couples work I draw on the Gottman Method, Imago therapy, parts work (IFS), and nervous system regulation, so partners can understand each other and handle conflict differently. Across all my work I use acceptance-based skills (ACT) so you can change your relationship with hard feelings, not only try to get rid of them.
Nothing is broken. Our work is about creating more harmony within you, and between you and the people in your life, so that what once protected you doesn't have to run your life now.

Sessions are collaborative. I won't hand you a script or tell you what to do. We'll go at a pace that feels safe, and you'll leave each session with something specific to try. Couples and individual sessions both start with understanding what you're hoping for and what's been getting in the way.
Secure video sessions for people in New Jersey, New York, and other states that participate in PSYPACT, the interstate agreement that allows psychologists to see clients by telehealth across state lines. You'll need to be physically located in one of those states during your session.
Short Hills, New Jersey, for a small number of clients.
45-minute session: $300. 60-minute session: $400. The fee is the same for individuals and couples.
Self-pay. I provide a superbill (a detailed receipt). If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you can submit it to your insurance company to ask about reimbursement. Whether and how much you're reimbursed depends on your plan, so it's worth checking with them first.
Please give at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. I know this is a real investment. I'd rather you feel clear and comfortable about it before we begin, so please ask me anything about fees or how it works.

Send me a short note through the button below. You don't need to explain everything. A few sentences about what's going on and whether you're looking for individual or couples work is plenty.
I reply within 24 hours. I'll answer your questions and, if it feels like a good fit, share times for a first session.
We'll start with a first session where we talk about what you're hoping for and what's been getting in the way.
Tell me a little about what's going on and whether you're looking for individual or couples work. I reply within 24 hours.

My practice is self-pay and I'm not in-network with insurance companies. I provide a superbill. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you can submit it to your insurer to ask about reimbursement.
I see clients online in New Jersey, New York, and other PSYPACT states, and in person in Short Hills, NJ. You need to be physically located in a participating state during your session. If you're not sure about your state, ask me when you reach out.
Many people find online sessions comfortable and convenient, and it lets us meet from wherever you feel safest. If you'd prefer to meet in person, I have a small in-person practice in Short Hills, NJ.
That's very common. We can start with a conversation about what each of you is hoping for.
That's okay. Many people start with a smaller step, such as the self-paced course below. You can also reach out with a question first.
If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (in the US) or go to your nearest emergency room.
A self-paced course ($99) with video lessons and downloadable materials, built on the same body-and-parts approach. It's a good option if you want to start now, on your own schedule, or if one-on-one therapy isn't the right fit right now.
